A mosaic is a form of artistic decoration which uses little pieces of colored glass, shells, tiles, minerals or stones. These colored pieces or fragments are placed on a chosen surface to create different patterns or pictures. The use of mosaic has been performed since ancient history. Some of the oldest Christian cathedrals and basilicas are adorned with fancy glass mosaics that depict the images of religious figures, saints, prophets, angels and crosses. The art of mosaic is used as tiles, doorways, carpets, portraits, gazebos, vases, fireplaces, windows, jewelry, statues, sundials and medallions.

Mosaic medallions are decorative pieces which provide additional character to rooms. Some mosaic patterns are geometrically-patterned. They present a rich fusion of colors and shapes such as stars, pinwheels, spirals, roses and blossoms that accentuates every home. Others even opt for vintage-themed designs such as cavemen, animals, hunters, saints, wars and other historic events or personalities. Some mosaic medallions add a historical flair to homes while some mosaic medallions provide an artistic touch. Mosaic medallions may be placed in the different parts of the house such as the floors, the entrances, the tubs, the foyers, the hallways, the fountains, the pools, the bathrooms, the walls and even in table tops. Mosaic medallions provide elegance, posh, exquisiteness and beauty to all places. Mosaic medallions are available in a variety of shapes such as round, square, oval and rectangle. The most popular among the four mentioned shapes are the round mosaic medallions.

One of type of material used in making mosaic medallions is marble. It is most commonly used in decorating floors. Marble may be used to create mosaic medallions that provide various textures, nice colors and fine polish to any floor. Marble mosaic medallions also elevate ceramic, glass, limestone, wood and granite floor coverings. The disadvantage in using marble for mosaic medallions is the fact that it is a stone material. It is vulnerable to scratches, stains and scrapes so it is advisable to situate them in places which are seldom passed by the people. Marble also has its advantageous properties. During warmer seasons, marble floors provide extra coolness on naked feet.

When it comes to mosaic decorations in the bathroom, many people still prefer to use marble as a medium. Marble mosaic tiles are durable, creative, colorful and appealing. They are carefully polished to present a natural luster and a unique appearance. Since marble is more roughly-textured than other materials like glass, it is great for bathroom floor tiles. Marble mosaic tiles lessen the slippery properties of the floors which usually cause accidents. Other parts of the bathroom that can be decorated by mosaic tiles are showers, tub decks, bathroom walls and back-splashes. The use of mosaic tiles is certainly a great innovation especially for people who are tired of the same boring white bathrooms.

Experts recommend the use of various mosaic medallions when it comes to decorating table tops. The combination of materials such as marble, glass, granite, onyx and ceramic in beautifying tables is great for achieving a very stylish yet distinct appearance. The only problem with using marble in table tops is the reality that marble is easily stained. Fluids such as juices and sauces will certainly leave marks on marble-covered tables. The most popular designs in mosaic table tops are the floral patterns. Roses, lotuses, tulips, Fleur-de-lis and other types of flowers look perfect everywhere. They easily blend with any motif or color and they practically add brilliance and class.

Mosaic medallions add decorative flair to any project or room for which they are used. The seemingly endless color and material options for mosaic medallions make them ideal for any design scheme or motif. Though mosaic medallions have been around for centuries, they are still stylish and relevant today.
